A new research-based online encyclopedia covering all aspects of Greenland, available for free ahead of crucial elections in Greenland

With an upcoming election set to shape Greenland’s political future, international attention focusing on the Arctic nation is growing. Now, a new authoritative publication, Trap Greenland, offers in-depth, research-based insights into Greenland’s nature, history, culture, and society – available for free online at Lex – The National Danish Encyclopedia (trap.gl) in English and Greenlandic and in Danish (trap-groenland.lex.dk).

With increasing global focus on Greenland’s role in i.a. climate change, natural resources, and geopolitics, Trap Greenland delivers well-researched, credible, and expert-reviewed information on topics such as the melting Greenland Ice Sheet, traditional Inuit culture, the country’s path to self-governance, and modern urban life in Nuuk and beyond.

“Greenland is at the center of global discussions—politically, economically, and environmentally. With an important election ahead, the online encyclopedia on Greenland ensures that anyone, anywhere, can access reliable, research-driven insights into the country’s past, and present,” says Professor Niels Elers Koch, editor-in-chief of Trap Greenland and chairman of the board of Lex – The National Danish Encyclopedia.

The growing international interest in Greenland extends beyond climate change and natural resources, it is also a geopolitical issue. As debates continue over Greenland’s future status, with some advocating for full independence while others consider closer ties to Denmark or the United States, access to fact-based knowledge is more crucial than ever. Trap Greenland provides a research-driven understanding of the country’s history, society, and political development, offering a solid foundation for an informed discussion on Greenland’s future.

A Collaborative Effort Between Experts and Institutions

The creation of Trap Greenland is the result of extensive collaboration between Greenlandic and Danish researchers, historians, and subject-matter experts. A total of 87 scholars – primarily from Greenland – have contributed to the encyclopedia, ensuring an authentic and well-researched representation of the country. The editorial and quality assurance process has been carried out in close cooperation with the scientific community and the editorial team behind the Trap Danmark series.

The project has been made possible through generous funding from several independent Danish private foundations, including Dronning Margrethes og Prins Henriks Fond, A.P. Møller Fonden, Augustinus Fonden, Aage og Johanne Louis-Hansen Fond, and C.E.G. Gads Fond, and for Trap Greenland also 15 donors from Greenland. The publication is part of the renowned Trap Danmark series, which has documented the Kingdom of Denmark six times over the last 165 years. For the first time, all articles from Trap Greenland are also freely accessible in English and Greenlandic at trap.gl and Danish at trap-groenland.lex.dk, making expert knowledge about Greenland available to researchers, journalists, policymakers, and the general public worldwide.

As Greenland’s political future is being shaped, Trap Greenland provides an essential, well-researched foundation for informed discussion.
